ATLANTA -

Georgia is asking the Federal government to waive the environmental requirements on Atlanta's gasoline after Isaac shut down many of the refineries due to Isaac.

Governor Nathan Deal announced Wednesday that the Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to waive the requirements for normal summertime gasoline through September 15th. Normally, the gas at the pump this time of year is cleaner burning and has a lower volatility which helps to reduce its impact on air quality.

Gov. Deal says this will help to prevent a potential shortage caused refineries being shut down along the Gulf Coast ahead of Isaac.

There are 45 counties in and around the metro Atlanta area which are required to sell the fuel. The summertime fuel usually sold through November.

The state may ask for an extension if production is not back up to normal levels by the deadline.
