GULFPORT (FOX 13) -
A possibly suicidal student was arrested at Boca Ciega High School for carrying a loaded gun to school Wednesday.
Police in Gulfport say the school resource officer at the school was notified by a female student who had received alarming text messages from a 17-year-old male student. A subsequent search of the male student's backpack turned up a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol, police said.
The teen told police he had gotten the gun from a safe at his home where, in the past, he watched his mother punch in the safe code without her knowledge.
According to police, the student also said he intended to shoot himself after school and wasn't going to harm anyone else.
The student, a junior, was taken into protective custody and will be charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
