One person was killed and three others injured Friday night in a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 92 in Winter Haven.
Orlando Colon, a 51-year-old Mulberry resident, was airlifted by helicopter to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he later died. He was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the incident.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report the collision occurred just before 7 p.m. near intersection of Lynchburg Rd. Investigators say a 2004 white Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck driven by Trevor Werner was heading east when for unknown reasons the vehicle entered the westbound lanes.
The truck struck a 2008 silver-colored Honda Sports Utility Vehicle driven by Nivea Ramos, a 44-year-old Mulberry woman. Ramos, 44, attempted to avoid the collision when she saw the truck heading in her direction.
The SUV went into a clockwise spin after impact and Werner's vehicle flipped over on its roof before striking a utility pole. Werner, 39, suffered several broken bones and lacerations and was transported to LRMC.
He is expected to recover from his injuries.
Ramos was also taken to LRMC for treatment of several broken bones and a back injury. Colon was in the front passenger seat of Ramos' SUV.
Orlando DeJesus, a 14-year-old Mulberry resident, was airlifted by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
A preliminary investigation revealed Werner may have been impaired at the time of the crash. So far no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
