ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

A 21-year-old member of the National Guard was injured Thursday night after a gun accidentally discharged in his hotel room.

Michael Wdowiak was in town helping during the RNC and was shot inside a room at the La Quinta Hotel in St. Petersburg. The gun belongs to Jeffrey A. Spurr, who was holding the gun when it went off, deputies said.

Deputies said Spurr and Wdowiak were looking at the grip of the gun, a 357 revolver.

At least three others were in the room, but no one else was injured, deputies said. Wdowiak was undergoing surgery Friday.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the shooting.
