It's certainly not the conventional way of traveling these days, but one billionaire arrived in Tampa for the RNC via rail car.
The Patron Tequila Express is 280,000 pounds of pure metal, and the preferred ride of Forbes-ranked billionaire John Paul Dejoria. The owner of Patron Tequila and Paul Mitchell Haircare Systems took the tracks to Tampa for the RNC.
"He's a rail fan. He's a history buff. He recognizes the legend quality of the train and he just loves it," said Chris Shaffer of the Patron Tequila Express.
While the rail car hails back to 1927, it's anything but dated. It's fully-functional and regularly restored. Dejoria is interested in every detail, paying special attention to craftsmanship of a more extravagant era.
While the majority of the rail car is true to the 1920's, there is one exception: a state of the art kitchen.
"We can turn out five-star gourmet meals in here. We've got everything we need," said Patron Tequila Express stewardess Emily Bradley.
The Patron Tequila Express even hosted 100 for a RNC event this week.
"The idea is that people can see this and realize that this once existed," Shaffer said.
Shaffer says the rail car isn't around to push a partisan point. Instead, Dejoria uses the railroads as a platform to remind politicians of a powerful agenda of the past.
"Use the American entrepreneurial spirit, use the ingenuity of the Americans, get back to us being manufacturers," Shaffer said.
The Patron Tequila Express is taking off from Tampa on Friday and heading to Charlotte, North Carolina for the Democratic National Convention. While Patron won't disclose the rail car's cost today, it sold back in the 1920's for $200,000.
