Whether it's protesters or road closures, we've been expecting the unexpected this week during the RNC.
One tool that's been helping: Our phones.
"We are encouraging all businesses and citizens whether you live or work downtown to sign up for Alert Tampa," said Officer Irene Thomas with Tampa Police.
Anyone can sign up for Alert Tampa and once you register online you'll start receiving updates from Tampa Police, like informing you about a possible evacuation, gas leak or other critical threat.
"It's basically an alert system that will give any citizen that lives or works within the City of Tampa critical alerts that could affect them," Thomas said.
This is a year round alert system that could help us all during any and all emergencies - big and small.
"Especially during the hurricane season," Thomas said. "It's very important to sign up and it will also give you mandatory evacuation information as well."
But there is another alert system now in place - just for the RNC. NC-4 is just for business owners in and around downtown.
"Any of our big facilities that we feel may be affected during the RNC that we want to reach those key leaders so that they can disseminate that information to their employees if they need to make a decision," Thomas said.
They may get more sensitive alerts, and with these alerts business owners can give feedback.
"NC4 has a two-way communication system that was created specifically for the RNC," she said.
Alert Tampa and NC-4 are keeping us all in the loop and up to speed during the convention, so we know exactly where we can go and what we need avoid.
