Police warn of false information on social media

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Tampa police say they're dealing with a new problem at the Republican National Convention: Protest groups spreading false rumors across social media.

There were several bits of information tweeted out by protest groups Monday during demonstrations, police said, trying to mix-up police and get the media to bite.

"#RNC2012: 50 glass bottles filled with liquid found on rooftop in Ybor City. Liquid tested, not flammable, reports @CarsonChambers," tweeted @YourAnonNews, the Twitter account for the anarchist group Anonymous.

Other tweets suggested officers had restricted demonstrator's access to water along the parade route Monday, which police quickly denied and deemed false.

The city says it's using its "Joint Information Center" to sift through social media sites to crack down on the false rumors.
