ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Gov. Mark Dayton on Monday appointed Judge Wilhelmina Wright to the Minnesota Supreme Court. The appointment is the first by a Democratic governor since Rudy Perpich in 1991.

Wright comes to the high court from the Minnesota Court of Appeals, to which she was appointed in 2002 by Gov. Jesse Ventura. The 48-year-old from St. Paul is the first black woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Wright takes the seat vacated by retiring Justice Helen Meyer.
