Publix experiments with digital coupons

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Scissors and a file. For couponers, they are essential tools of the trade. But soon, they may no longer need them.

Publix is testing out digital coupons in several markets outside Tampa Bay. Here is how they work: you go to the Publix website and set up an account. You indicate what kind of coupons you're looking for, and the system pulls them in.

When you go to the store, you punch your phone number into the keypad.

"You simply rely on the system to deduct the savings in the coupon bank from the total order," said Shannon Patten, a Publix spokeswoman.

Patten is emphatic about saying the system is not available in our area. There are pilot programs in Ocala, and two in Alabama, one in Birmingham, the other in Huntsville.

If they are successful, it seems likely that Tampa Bay couponers may be able to move into the digital age as well.
