TAMPA (FOX 13) -
Olympic silver medalist and former Florida Gator Jeff Demps has agreed to
a deal with the New England Patriots, opting against a move to the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers, Fox 13 has learned.
Demps' official
announcement will come this afternoon. The decision for the former Gator
running back and Olympic sprinter came down between the Bucs and Patriots.
Demps just felt New England is a better fit. New England is a preseason
Super Bowl favorite, giving them an edge over Tampa Bay.
The Bucs made a
strong push for Demps. They had been in discussions with his representatives
for months.
Demps is flying
back to Orlando after visiting with New England. That's when he will make is announcement.
In four years at Florida, Demps had 2,470
career yards rushing and 23 touchdowns.
He did not attend
any college football senior all-star games or take part in any NFL draft
workouts.
Demps' sole focus was
on the Olympics. He didn't run on the USA's
4x100 team, but did earn a silver medal in London for being part of the team.
