NEW YORK (AP) -

The head of the New York FBI office will retire this month after 25 years of service with the bureau.

Janice K. Fedarcyk has led the FBI's largest field office for two years. She is the highest-ranking female law enforcement officer in the field.

She has overseen major cases including insider trading, wire fraud, and counterterrorism investigations.

She announced Thursday that her last day will be Aug. 24, 2012.

Her replacement has not yet been named.

Fedarcyk previously served in Los Angeles as a special agent in charge of the Counterterrorism Division and as a special agent in charge in Philadelphia.

She plans to open a consulting business in Washington.
