SARASOTA (FOX 13) -
A 27-year-old man faces first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a Charlotte County firefighter.
Michael L. Minor Jr. is accused of killing Sam Dreher, 39, in a robbery attempt Saturday night at the Saratoga Place apartment complex off the Central Sarasota Parkway, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office has confirmed Dreher, who was a lieutenant and a 15-year veteran, died from his injuries suffered during some sort of struggle.
Dreher was found on a set of stairs suffering from one or more gunshot wounds to the head.
Minor was located at the scene and allegedly told deputies that he did not mean to shoot Dreher and was sorry.
He was found to be in possession of a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun.
Investigators say the suspect fired at least four shots in Dreher's direction. Minor is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 31.
