A 20-year-old North Port man was killed Sunday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 just east of Toledo Blade Blvd.
Matthew Phillip Stephens was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three others in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Aphrodite Karys was traveling east on I-75 in her 1998 Pontiac Sunfire just before 8 a.m. when she veered onto the south shoulder of the roadway.
Karys, 20, steered back to the left and proceeded to travel in a northeast direction crossing both southbound lanes of I-75. The right front end of the Sunfire struck a cable barrier and then went underneath it.
The vehicle went back into the median where it struck some shrubbery before veering back and hitting the cable barrier again.
Karys and two other passengers in her vehicle – Samantha Marie Johnson and Paige Ellen Phillips – were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Karys and Johnson, 16, were wearing their seatbelts; Stephens and Phillips, 18, were not.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The official cause is not yet known as the investigation continues.
