A longtime member of the Charlotte County Fire Department is fighting for his life after he was shot Saturday following an argument with another man at a Sarasota County apartment complex.
Sam Dreher, 39, was airlifted by helicopter to Blake Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
Michael L. Minor Jr. was arrested at the scene.
He is facing one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of attempted robbery with a firearm and one count of burglary of a conveyance with a firearm.
According to a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report deputies were dispatched to the Saratoga Place apartment complex at 5070 Central Sarasota Parkway in response to a shots fired call.
Dreher, a North Port resident, was located on a set of stairs suffering from one or more gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators say the victim sustained life threatening injuries and is not expected to survive.
He is a lieutenant with the Charlotte County Fire Department and has worked for them for more than 15 years.
Minor, 27, was located still at the scene and allegedly told deputies that he did not mean to shoot Dreher and was sorry.
He was found to be in possession of a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun.
Investigators say the suspect fired at least four shots in Dreher's direction. Minor was transported to SCSO's Criminal Investigations office for additional questioning.
He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail where he is being held without bond. Minor is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on August 31st.
It is not yet known what started the argument that led to the shooting. The investigation continues.
