One man was killed in a plane crash in St. Petersburg Wednesday.
It happened at Albert Whitted Airport around 2 p.m.
Witnesses tell police the plane took off and was about 100 feet in the air when the engine sputtered and the plane nosedived back onto the runway.
Rescue crews extricated the pilot, 79-year-old James Allen Finnegan, and his passenger, 37-year-old James Patrick Murphy.
Finnegan was killed in the crash; Murphy's injuries were not life-threatening, and he was able to speak with investigators.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Finnegan was the owner of the plane, but hadn't flown for several years, and was taking refresher instruction from Murphy.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.
