A 25-year-old Tampa man charged with killing a former Wharton High School student made his first appearance before a judge on Sunday morning.
Benjamin Lee Powell was denied bond on a charge of second-degree murder.
Investigators say the suspect stabbed 18-year-old Grant Woodham to death on Thursday night in a botched drug transaction.
The victim was found lying face down on the entry sidewalk to a residence in the 9600 block of Fox Hearst Rd. in Tampa. The homeowner called deputies who found Woodham with a stab wound to the chest.
A preliminary investigation revealed the victim had left a friends home in order to sell narcotics to an unknown black male.
When deputies found Woodham the 2010 Dodger Charger he was last seen driving was nowhere to be found. Powell was found behind the wheel of the Charger by HCSO deputies on Friday night and arrested.
In addition to the murder charge the suspect is also facing one count of grand theft auto and one count of marijuana possession.
Powell is no stranger to law enforcement in Hillsborough County. He has three prior arrests since 2006, all are drug-related.
