Investigators in Sarasota are gathering evidence in a pair of motorcycle crashes that occurred during a four-hour span late Friday/early Saturday.
The second one claimed the life of a 39-year-old man. John Zito was pronounced dead at the scene just before 2:30 AM.
According to a Sarasota Police Department report Zito was traveling south on US 41 at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Sports Utility Vehicle at the intersection of Waldemere St.
Zito, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say the deceased was a resident of Sarasota.
The first crash occurred just after 10 PM on South Tamiami Trail near the Morris St. Intersection. Investigators say a 69-year-old man was traveling south on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when it collided with a Volkswagen in the center turn lane.
The other vehicle was heading north the report states.
The unidentified man was airlifted by helicopter to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and suffered non life threatening injuries.
Both crashes are under investigation by officers with SPD's Traffic Unit.
