An arrest has been made in Thursday night's stabbing death of a former Wharton High School student.
Benjamin Lee Powell was apprehended Friday night by Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies. The 25-year-old Tampa was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail where he is being held without bond.
According to a HCSO report Grant S. Woodham, 18, was found lying face-down on the entry sidewalk of a residence in the 9600 block of Fox Hearst Rd. just before 8 PM Thursday.
Detectives say he was killed with a metal object that was still embedded in his chest when deputies found him.
A preliminary investigation revealed Woodham had left a friend's residence in order to sell narcotics to an unknown black male.
The victim was driving a black 2010 Dodger Charger, Florida tag – AUZ I08, which was not found at the crime scene.
HCSO Homicide Detectives conducted several interviews and followed several leads in the hours following the discovery of the body.
A person of interest – Powell – was identified and surveillance was conducted. Just after 6 PM Friday a black male was observed in the driver's seat of a vehicle matching the description of the one Woodham was driving.
Powell was approached and arrested without incident. The Dodge Charger was towed from the scene for processing. After consulting with the a member of the State Attorney's Office Powell was charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of grand theft and one count of possession of marijuana.
The suspect has three prior arrests in Hillsborough County, all were drug-related.
According to Woodham's Facebook page, he graduated from Wharton High School in June.
