Quinn signs legislation for crime victims

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Legislation that state leaders say helps protect crime victims is now law.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed three bills Monday that beef up existing laws and practices.

Under one new law, enforcement officers have to provide a copy of victim rights within 48 hours of first contact and explain assistance that victims might qualify for under the Crime Victims Compensation Act.

The act was established in the 1970s. Its goal is to help reduce the financial burden on victims of violent crime and their families. A victim's fund helps with expenses accrued as a result of violent crime.

Another new law increases compensation available to victims. A third changes the way fines are calculated to contribute to the fund.
