A Hillsborough deputy faces animal cruelty charges after investigators say four miniature horses in her care were malnourished and emaciated.
Deputy Pamela Belo, 48, surrendered to the Orient Road Jail Monday afternoon. She is charged with one count of felony animal cruelty and one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Investigators say they were contacted by the RVR Horse Rescue, where Belo surrendered the four horses on July 3rd. The staff there contacted the sheriff's office because of the condition of the animals.
The sheriff's office says between now and July of last year, Belo deprived two of the miniature horses of food to the point that one eventually died of starvation. The second horse lost a high percentage of body weight, but is expected to recover, the sheriff's office said.
Belo worked for the sheriff's office for 23 years in the Community Outreach Division.
