Three people are accused of using an 18-month-old baby in a stroller to steal hundreds of dollars in Nike shoes, the sheriff's office said.
The situation unfolded Wednesday at a Kohl's store in Port Charlotte, deputies said. Sara Landis, 29, Michael Anderson, 31, and Adam Shartle, 27, entered the store before 8:15 p.m., deputies said.
Security notified the sheriff's office that they put about $545 worth of shoes inside a baby stroller – with the baby inside – and left the building.
Security told the trio to come back inside the store, but they refused, bolting for a nearby Ford Taurus.
The security officer told deputies that in the process Landis threw the baby from his stroller into the car through the open window. And the officer also said Shartle threw a pair of shoes at her, hitting her in the head.
The suspects took off, but deputies were able to track down their car. All three were taken to the Charlotte County Jail.
The baby was taken to his grandmother in North Port, the sheriff's office said.
The suspects face several charges, including grand theft. Landis also faces child abuse charges, and Shartle has been charged with battery.
Anderson and Shartle remain in jail. Landis was released on $6,000 bond.
