Teens, 16, accused of murdering St. Pete man

Posted: Updated:

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with murder after the death of a St. Petersburg man in a residential neighborhood.

For days, investigators were trying to determine if the man's death was connected to a bizarre traffic accident, where two other teens took a 2007 Pontiac for a joyride in a neighbor's yard.

But it's now been determined that those incidents were separate.

Police said 20-year-old Jeremy Mayers was murdered in Coquina Key by 16-year-old Scionti Hill and Brittany Detwiler during a robbery.

Police said Hill and Detwiler conspired to rob Mayers when he arrived at his home Sunday morning. The pair used a shotgun to beat and choke him to the point of unconsciousness, police said.

They then took off with his cell phone, wallet and Chevy Impala, according to police.

While investigating the joyride incident, police found Mayers' body. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead later that morning.
