Tampa Electric Company is warning customers of a scam that they say hundreds of customers have fallen for.
Customers are being contacted by people claiming to be TECO employees who claim President Obama has a new program that will pay their utility bills.
The scammers say they need the customer's personal information to sign them up—information like Social Security and credit card numbers.
According to a TECO spokeswoman, around 2,000 customers have been affected.
The scam isn't just limited to TECO: it has been spreading to utility customers across the country, and is being spread through social media.
TECO wants customers to know that employees do not ever ask for credit card, debit card or checking account information.
The scam is not new: according to Snopes.com, a website dedicated to exposing false urban legends, some form of it has been around for quite a while.
FOX 13's Anthony Miller is following this story for 10 and 11.
