INVERNESS (FOX 13) -

A 62-year-old Ocala man died Saturday night from injuries sustained in a sanctioned bus race at the Citrus County Speedway in Inverness.

Charles ‘Chick' Whitehead was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred just before 10 PM at the facility located at 3600 South Florida Ave.

According to a Citrus County Sheriff's Office report Whitehead was behind the wheel of a large green bus that overturned during special ‘Figure 8' event. The vehicle landed on its roof.

When emergency service personnel reached Whitehead he was still in the driver's seat, restrained by his racing safety harness.

Another bus that was involved in the race struck Whitehead's bus but not other injuries were reported. The deceased's body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Leesburg to determine an official cause of death.

The cause of the fatal crash is under investigation by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.
