TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A 62-year-old inmate at the Hillsborough County Jail collapsed and later died at Tampa General Hospital on Saturday.

Randall Walton Willis was transported to TGH at 7 AM after he became ill in his general population housing unit.

He was pronounced dead just after 3 PM.

Willis was arrested and charged with murder in the March 20th shooting death of his wife, 61-year-old Gilda Willis.

Investigators say Willis called 9-1-1 shortly after pulling the trigger. He allegedly told a dispatcher what he had done and said he would put away the gun and wait for police to arrive.

They found Willis on the porch of his Eastern Hillsborough County home. He was booked into the Falkenburg Road Jail on one count of second-degree murder.

Tapes from the 9-1-1 call revealed Willis and his wife were about to be evicted from their home and were out of money. The suspect could no longer afford the medicine his wife needed and he allegedly shot her as she slept to keep her from suffering further.

The official cause of Willis' death is under investigation.
