A 23-year-old Sarasota woman was arrested Friday on aggravated child abuse charges.

Ella Marie McCulligh was booked into the Sarasota County Jail and released after posting bond.

She is scheduled to be arraigned on July 27th.

According to a Sarasota Police Department report a 2 ½ - month-old female infant suffered serious injuries earlier this week and was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

An investigation revealed the child's rib cage area had been crushed. The arrest report indicates McCulligh is the mother of the infant.

SPD Detectives began collecting evidence and McCulligh was questioned. During an interview with investigators the suspect admitted to squeezing the infant after she became upset because the little girl wouldn't stop crying.

McCulligh, who lives in the 1400 block of 18th St. in Sarasota, was arrested without incident. She has one prior arrest in Sarasota County according to court records. The current condition of the injured child is not known.

She was charged with disorderly conduct in January 2011 but the charge was later dropped.
