Man falls from Johns Pass Bridge

MADEIRA BEACH (FOX 13) -

A 31-year-old Pinellas Park man was seriously injured Friday night when he fell approximately 40 feet from the Johns Pass Bridge in Pinellas County.

Joseph Schleg was transported by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with life threatening injuries.

According to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report deputies were dispatched to the bridge at approximately 10:45 PM to assist in traffic control following an injured person transport.

Investigators say Schleg was fishing when he began to walk along the catwalk. He apparently did not see an opening in the walkway fell and landed on the concrete below.

Emergency personnel prepared him for transport in the parking lot of the Friendly Fisherman Restaurant.

Schleg suffered multiple fractures and is listed in critical condition. The incident appears to be accidental in nature.
