Clean up continues in Lakeland

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

Not everyone is up to swinging a chain saw to cut up downed limbs. Unless you're young, spry and fearless, you may not be into shimmying up a tree to trim either.

So right now, after Tropical Storm Debby, people all over Tampa Bay are hiring out. If you do, get ready to possibly pay big bucks. Many tree services charge between $250 and $300 an hour.

William Stierwalt didn't have to. He lives in the Interlachen neighborhood, the hardest hit area of Lakeland.

At a time when tree services are literally cleaning up financially, Stierwalt's friends at Tom's Tree Service, put aside their paid work to help him out.

"I think it's a pretty good thing," Stierwalt told FOX 13 on Wednesday. And a real money saver. It would have cost six or seven hundred dollars otherwise.

In Lakeland after a storm, you or your tree service or can bring cut limbs curbside and the city will pick them up for free.

The city certainly had plenty of work in Stierwalt's neighborhood. Trees came down in a number of yards crushing fences and barely missing homes.

Monday, the day a tornado whipped though, was covered in limbs and debris from dozens of majestic old oaks.

Late Wednesday afternoon, city work crews had cleaned most of it up.
