Summer camp goes high-tech

Posted: Updated:

It is an awful lot of brainpower packed into one room -- drilling, cutting, and re-thinking. Welcome to "Camp Nuvu" at Florida Southern College, where the theme is "Superheros."

Kids, primarily from All Saint's Academy in Winter Haven, are building robots, designing protective armor and creating computer-generated comic strips.

"I thought it was going to be super fun, and I was right," Isa Carillo told FOX 13 on Thursday.

Isa, who is working on a mechanical cat that will be able to zip around and move its ears by remote control, is 10 years old.

All Saints' and Florida Southern have brought in a company called Nuvu. Its staff has all graduated from MIT or other Ivy League schools and are experts in their field. There is an architect, a rocket scientist, and others.

The two-week session encourages kids to be creative and not fear failure.

"The is just around the corner," said Ryan Walls, academic dean at All Saints.'

Apparently, Nuvu's message is getting through. The founder of the company, Saeed Arida, said, "Even sometimes when you are teaching college kids at MIT, you don't get the same quality.''
