Two children who just lost their mother to cancer have now lost their father too. A pair of violent overnight home invasions left a St. Pete man dead.

According to investigators, the first crime happened around 4:20 a.m. at a home on 1st Street N. Several armed suspects shouting, "Police, police, police!" broke into a house and demanded jewelry before fleeing.

Less than a half-hour later, several armed suspects broke into a home on Orpine Drive and demanded cash or drugs, also shouting that they were with police. Homeowner Richard Shaw, who was at home with one of his sons, was shot during the robbery.

The 41-year-old was taken to Northside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The murder comes just eight days after the death of Tory Shaw, Richard's wife. She passed away last Monday after a long bout with cancer. Now, the couple's three sons have lost both of their parents.

A neighbor said the Shaws had lived at the home for 18 years, and hinted at trouble involving the couple's sons.

"As far as Rick Shaw was concerned, no drugs on him, no drugs in his system. Guns, maybe. Because he had to protect [himself]. He's had this happen before. He just got stabbed a week or a month ago over this with his kids. He did have to go out and get protection and there was concern. Now this has happened and it's just awful," offered Timothy Bidwell.

Police say they two crimes seem to be the work of the same suspects. Investigators say they are studying surveillance video in hopes of extracting some description of the masked suspects.

Detectives believe the victims in both cases were specifically targeted, but they did not elaborate.
