On a mission to help others

LARGO (FOX 13) -

She's only 16, and all ready one Osceola High School student is making it her mission to help others.

There is no telling what kind of grief the families at the Ronald McDonald House go through.

Taylor Salazar is not afraid to jump right in and help. "I like volunteering because it makes me feel good. I can help these families feel more at home when they're having a hard time and their children are in the hospital."

She'll spend the summer taking care of whatever needs to be done. There will be work in the kitchen, making lunch, and some playtime with the kids; but, it will mostly be housework.

"It's good to know that I can help keep it organized. When they come back after a long day, they're not overwhelmed with house chores and everything."

The families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House sometimes come from far away so their children can get the best medical help. They spend weeks, sometimes months at All Children's Hospital.

Taylor says, "I think they realize people are helping. They might feel alone and that people are there to help if they need it. I know I'm young, but I can try and do the best I can to help," says

The hours she spends at the Ronald McDonald House go towards the community service she needs to get a Bright Futures Scholarship.

Taylor says she'd do it even if that wasn't the case, "I would like to do this every summer. Even after I graduate. Its fun and I get to talk to a few families."

The kids who want the Bright Futures Scholarship have to earn 100 hours of community service during their high school years. This typically means each summer they have to do at least a little work.

Most say it's a great experience. They say taking the focus off themselves and putting it on someone else feels pretty good.
