One man is dead in Polk County after authorities said his stepfather shot him.
It happened just before 3 p.m. Wednesday in Winter Haven.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 63-year-old Stephen Phillips shot 33-year-old Jay Sherill once in the chest.
The sheriff's office says it does not anticipate filing charges against Phillips.
Here is the account the sheriff's office gave of what led to the shooting:
According to Stephen Phillips, he and Sherrill were involved in a verbal altercation outside of Phillips' residence.
Phillips told detectives he feared Sherrill's behavior would get violent, so he went back inside his house to avoid Sherrill.
They say Sherrill forced his way into the house and threatened to kill Phillips.
Phillips told detectives he got a shotgun and yelled at Sherrill to get out of the residence. Sherrill continued to advance toward Phillips in a threatening manner and Phillips fired a single shot striking Sherrill in chest, investigators said. Sherrill died at the scene.
An autopsy will be performed on Sherill. The investigation is still underway.
