Pole-dancing the pounds away

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

As a writer for Tampa Bay Parenting and a mother to little Sarina, Lisa-Marie Leihy knows a thing or two about being a mom. But like so many of her peers, getting back to her pre-pregnancy weight was a struggle:

"I've done walking, I've tried some other things. It's just not coming off," she complained. "I modified my diet, still nothing. So I said, I've gotta do something."

So she entered South Tampa Magazine's fitness challenge and was chosen to try something she never dreamed of -- pole dancing.

"Other than what I see on Dale Mabry, no, I had no idea."

That is until she met Trina Glenn, owner of the Kiss 'N Tale studio in Channelside.

"We don't even like the word 'pole dancer,'" Glenn offered. "We say we are 'pole fitness professionals.'"

As in, professionals who help their clients learn to work the pole while they whittle their middles:

"It's that stubborn belly fat area that we all have had or currently have that we want to get rid of," she continued. "Pole will not only transform their entire body but target those very stubborn hard-to-reach areas."

Glenn says the upper body strength will come. It's really all about your core.

"I was surprised by how quickly I could pull myself up on the pole," Leihy offered. "Strengthened my arms, strengthened my core, strengthened my legs…overall, I lost just over 15 pounds and that was my goal weight. So I'm thrilled."

Then there's the, shall we say, fringe benefits.

"Sensuality is a definitely a plus. If you don't have it, you develop it," Glenn pledged.

Nick Leihy agrees. He's a fan of what the pole is doing for his wife.

"She'd been in other workout schemes where she tried to lose weight, but this is the first time she's really lost weight," he said.

Lisa-Marie's hooked. She's lost weight, her clothes fit better, and she likes the way pole fitness makes her feel.

"I feel fabulous," she said. "My strength is back. My confidence is even bigger and better than before. And I'm having fun working out. That's the best part."

Single classes at Kiss 'N Tale are $25, but there are packages for $145 a month that include unlimited classes.

You start out with what they call 'kitty cat pole' for beginners, and you can go all the way to the top level -- 'headliners.'
