TAMPA (FOX 13) -
Gas prices continue their steady drop across Florida and now it looks
as though they are headed for $3 a gallon, according to AAA.
Prices at the pump fell again today. Now the average price
is $3.35 a gallon in Florida.
That's down 15 cents in just one week.
It's a huge turnaround from earlier this spring when it
looked as though motorists would be paying $4 a gallon this summer.
But a sluggish economy nationally and globally has pushed
oil prices below $85 a barrel for two weeks in a row. That hasn't happened
since last October.
Brenda Smith of AAA says you can expect gas prices to keep
falling unless the hurricane season turns bad.
"It could be a steady three to five cents a week. We
actually look at the possibility that before long they could fall as low as $3
as the national average. That would be wonderful news for everybody," said
Brenda Smith, with AAA.
"We're seeing that gas prices on average are falling
weekly by five cents a gallon. So over a period of time that adds up to the
savings that we're seeing today at the pump, and there's been a lot of oil
that's kind of been sitting in barrels because there's not been a need for it,
which also has lots to do with our decreasing gas prices."
Right now gas prices in Florida are nearly 20 cents below the
national average of $3.54 a gallon.
