SARASOTA (FOX 13) -

Two Sarasota County deputies were involved in a shooting Monday night that left one man dead.

It happened during a traffic stop around 9:30 at US 301 and 28th Street.

According to the sheriff's office, driver Rodney G. Mitchell in a white Jeep Liberty charged at one of the deputies during the stop.

Feeling threatened, the sheriff's office says the deputies, Adam Shaw and Sgt. Troy Sasse, opened fire on the Jeep.

The Mitchell took off, but a block away he lost control and crashed into bushes and another car in the parking lot of a Sunoco gas station.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger inside the vehicle fled the scene.

Both deputies were placed on administrative leave.
