Tampa teens launch into politics by forming super PAC

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

While some recent high school grads are taking it easy this summer, a few teens from Tampa Prep have launched a "super ambitious" plan to change the world.  They're barely old enough to vote, but they've launched a super PAC, or political action committee, called Young Americans for Rational Politics.

Alex Iannacio is the chairman and treasurer.  He filed the paperwork with and explains how they decided on the name.

"So much of our political life has become so irrational.  Laws that don't make sense, nobody understands them, even the regulatory boards that are supposed to understand can't put them into practice. So what we want to do is to call out these laws and statements and say we need to get on the right track."

A Super PAC can raise and spend endless amounts of money to express political views. Hundreds have now popped up and some have just as quickly disappeared, but Iannacio says he is in it for the long haul.

"We started a little late for 2012, so we're going to gear up for two years and everything in between," he said.

Iannacio is a Republican, but says his non-partisan group is made up of Democrats and Independents as well, and they are just starting to define the group's agenda.

"Internet freedom is a main thing for us, and for young voters when it comes to copyright and on-line postings," he said.

Iannacio says the super PAC has raised about $1,000, and he hopes when the word spreads, young people will donate.  He leaves for American University in the fall, so the group's headquarters will be moving from Tampa to Washington D.C. where he will be attending college.
