Tenoroc High teacher aide on run from the law

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd had some harsh words for a teacher's aide facing sexual abuse charges involving students he worked with at Tenoroc High School in Lakeland.

An arrest warrant was issued for Curtis Leonard Jiles on Friday. But so far, authorities have been unable to locate the 30-year-old Lakeland resident.

"He's a nasty, nasty guy and we need to get him away from kids," Judd said in a statement to members of the media Saturday afternoon.

Jiles is a paraprofessional educator in Tenoroc's exceptional student's education department according to the school's website.

"Across the state of Florida there are thousands of kids in school and teachers do wonderful job," explained Judd. "But occasionally you have a misfit."

It appears the suspect has worked for the Polk County School District for several years. Investigators say in May he paid two male students cash so he could perform sex acts on them.

He also stands accused of propositioning at least two others. Jiles is facing a laundry list of charges including two counts of sexual battery by a person in custodial authority.

Detectives are still gathering information from the suspect's alleged victims.

"On one occasion he had sex on campus in a school bathroom with a young man," Judd added. "On another occasion he followed one of these young men [home] from school – a young man who is also a minor - and had sex with him in a car."

This is not Jiles first brush with law enforcement.

Sheriff Judd says his agency investigated the suspect back in 2007, but was unable to come up with enough evidence to charge him with a crime.

That's not the case this time.

Judd: "Even though we have charges on four victims we know there's more than that."

Those living in the same neighborhood as Jiles couldn't believe a man they thought they knew could be facing such heinous crimes.

"It is pretty shocking to me because my kids have played with his kids and never would expect something like that," said one of Jiles neighbors' Johnny Williams.

Williams' family resides just a few doors away. Jiles is married with four young sons. He is also an active member of a Lakeland church located at 801 10th St. West.

"If what he's being accused of is true hopefully he goes away for a long time," Williams said.
