Police said they are keeping security tight at Chamberlain High School this week after a man threatened to shoot up the school.
Police say Freddy Velazquez, 40, who was suffering from mental illness, voluntarily checked himself into a mental health program last week.
What he told folks there was very unsettling – that he wanted to go to Chamberlain, chain the doors shut, start shooting people and then kill himself, police said.
He checked out of the facility Tuesday but was not taken into custody. Officers have added security to the school grounds, however, with Friday being the last day of school.
"It's hard to say how much of a threat anybody poses, and that's why we take the investigation seriously," Cpl. Kert Rojka of Tampa police said. "We're pursuing all avenues of this, and we're going to get to the bottom of it."
Some students we spoke with had no idea about the threat. The school is currently taking final exams.
Police said they are doing everything they can to ensure the safety of the school, but they would not say if Velazquez is under surveillance.
