There's a widely held notion that the Republican National Convention will be a financial boon for local businesses.
The influx of cash to the Bay area will be in full swing when the Grand Old Party comes to Tampa in August. The preparations are well under way.
"Our mission in addition to hosting convention is to create jobs, promote the economy and make sure local business get most out of the convention," said Ken Jones, an official with the 2012 Tampa Bay Host Committee.
The economic impact is expected to be approximately $175 million.
That number got one Tampa homeowner thinking: Why not get in on some of that action?
"We're going to have housing issues with the convention," explained Jonathan Brill. "If some people decide late that they can't get into the hotels that have been prescribed for their state, they're going to be looking for things."
To combat that issue Brill came up with RNCConventionHousing.com.
"It was something that I thought was a way for people locally to make some money," Brill said in an interview Sunday.
Much has been made of the RNC convention hotel assignments with the Florida delegation staying some 20 miles away at the posh Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor.
Now if a Florida delegate wants to stay a little closer to the action in downtown Tampa, there's an option.
The website gives local homeowners a chance to list their homes for rent during the convention, especially if they live close to the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
"That proximity is invaluable," added Brill.
The Tampa entrepreneur is putting his money where his mouth is. Brill and his family will be on vacation during the convention so he's making his South Tampa home available for rent as well.
"We're fortunate to have a home in close proximity to the convention center," he said. "I love Tampa, lived here a long time and love our city and think that the convention is going to be great for us and great for our businesses, but I think it will be great for homeowners as well."
Prices on the website range from $75 to $1,000 dollars a night.
That's not the only place where people can rent homes for the convention.
A quick check of Craig's List shows people listing homes for as much as $5,000 per week.
