Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of two Tampa teenagers in their south Tampa home.
On Thursday night, Tampa Police arrested 18-year-old Tavari Rashard Grant and charged him with murdering 16-year-old Kiara Brito and her 13-year-old brother, Jeremi, in their Interbay neighborhood home.
Detectives brought Grant to jail late last night, and they say he has been uncooperative with them. A second man, 19-year-old Charles Waits, is in custody and is a murder suspect as well, according to police.
Police say witnesses gave them a partial license plate number, which led them to Waits. According to investigators, the two teens knew Waits, so they felt comfortable answering their door Sunday night.
Police say both men entered the home on Van Buren Street intending to steal money, jewelry and electronics. The teens were home alone.
"They went to the house to rob it and they used the ruse of Waits who knew the kids that they would feel comfortable to open the door to Waits, so he knocked on the door and then a short time after they got inside the suspects shot and killed these two kids," said Laura McElroy of Tampa Police.
And someone pulled the trigger, killing both of them.
Waits was initially called “a person of interest” and was in jail already on drug charges.
On Friday at 3 p.m. there will be a memorial service for Kiara and Jeremi at the First Baptist Church of Port Tampa. It’s being organized by their mother, who was out of town with the murders happened.
