A married couple was found dead Monday night inside their home in the upscale Avila subdivision in northwest Tampa, the sheriff’s office says.
Detectives on Tuesday morning were searching the home, located at 814 Taray De Avila, and had closed off the gated community, which is home to many of Tampa’s largest mansions.
Detectives say a neighbor heard gunshots around 8 p.m. Shortly after, someone called 911.
Hector Rivera, 76, and Debra Rivera, 55, were found dead inside the home, and detectives were only saying Tuesday morning that they don’t believe it was a murder-suicide.
Doctor Hector Rivera was a general practitioner at Town N Country Medical Center off of Hillsborough, and Debra Rivera ran a business out of their home called Distinctive Creations, selling women's clothing and jewelry.
The Rivera’s son, Hector, is a local attorney.
Detectives obtained a search warrant to enter the home around 3 a.m. Tuesday, and they said they’ll likely be there searching the area the entire day.
“The crime scene is a bit complicated,” Sheriff David Gee said. “It’s going to take a long time. We’re going to do a very thorough job.”
FOX 13's April Kellogg will have more on this story Tuesday morning.
