FOX25 has obtained exclusive details and photos taken inside of Philip Markoff's jail cell after his suicide on Sunday.
The first photo shows the widely reported message that Markoff scrawled in blood on his jail cell wall. He wrote "Megan," a nod to his ex-fiance Megan McAllister, and "Pocket."
FOX25 has learned that "Pocket" was a term that Markoff and McAllister used for each other in their relationship.
Police said the words were left to send a message to his ex-fiancée whose pictures were also found inside his cell .
Sources tell FOX25 that Markoff and McAllister corresponded long after Megan ended their engagement even as Markoff sat in jail surrounded by pictures of the two. They talked about the murder investigation and the love they once shared.
Markoff’s suicide, likely no coincidence, came just one day after what would have been the couple’s one year wedding anniversary.
A source tells FOX25 that Markoff cut himself with a homemade knife , wrote the words and then went through the rest of the steps he used to take his life which included placing a plastic bag over his head .
That source also says that his training as a medical student is evident in the way he cut his body and the way he put bags on himself to contain the blood.
“He inflicted a series of small puncture wounds and incisions on his body. Including his neck, arms, wrists and ankles,” said Suffolk County DA Dan Conley in a press conference.
The exclusive photos also include the bag and the knife Philip Markoff used to take his own life.
Investigators believe that Markoff was also hoarding pills inside his cell which was a clue he may have been planning his suicide for some time.
Officers at the Nashua Street Jail say they checked on Markoff every 30 minutes like they were supposed to. The reason they did not realize what Markoff was doing was because he covered himself with a blanket to make it look like he was sleeping.
