Mother charged in teens' shooting deaths

Police say Julie Schenecker's mother told her she was depressed. But what they say happened next is hard for any parent to imagine.

"She has admitted to committing these crimes, of taking the lives of her two children," said Tampa Police Spokesperson Laura McElroy.

Calyx Schenecker, 16, and Beau Schenecker, 13, were found in their New Tampa home Friday, shot to death.

Police went to the home in the Ashington Reserve subdivison early Friday morning after a grandmother in Texas said she was concerned.

They went to the front door and said there was no answer.

That's when investigators said an officer went around back.

"He went around to the back door and that's where he ran into the mother and he immediately noticed there was blood on her clothing," said McElroy.

Police say Julie Schenecker used a 38 caliber pistol to murder her kids.

"It appeared that the children never saw it coming," McElroy said.

They say she confessed to the crime.

"She admitted to our officers that she planned to kill her children and to take her own life," said McElroy.

Now neighbors who knew the family in this gated community remember lives lost.

"Calyx was a very sweet girl, very soft spoken always very quiet and just a real sweetheart," said neighbor Seema Jain.

Julie Schenecker has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.

Father Parker Schencker is a colonel in the US Army who is currently serving in Qutar.

"He has been notified that his children have been killed," said McElroy.

One neighbor who knew the family went right home after hearing of the crime.

"This is really shaking me to the core, I just wanna go get my kids for a moment and hold on to them," said neighbor Michelle Ball.
