His signs were straight to the point: "Spirit Airlines tells dying man, no refund," and "Corporate Greed is spelled, Spirit Airlines."
Jerry Meekins has been told he has just a couple of months to live. But he's spending it fighting what he calls corporate greed.
Meekins protested outside the Spirit Airlines ticket counter at Tampa International Airport.
"Two minutes out of my life doesn't mean much. They've got a lot of years to live, they have to live with their own conscience," he said.
Meekins has been angry ever since the airline told him "non-refundable" means no refunds.
He has been battling esophageal cancer for two years. He had a CT scan last month, and doctors then told him the cancer has spread, and he shouldn't fly.
But Meekins say Spirit Airlines wouldn't even listen to his story. They only said no refunds.
Other veterans joined in on the protest at the airport.
"We've got 3 million Legionnaires, and when you take into account all veterans, you're talking 10 million people. Can Spirit Airlines really afford the negative publicity and the possible boycott of at least 10 million veterans?" said Bill Hamlin, Commander of American Legion Post 5, in Tampa.
Meekins says what really bothers him is that even though they are keeping his money, he imagines his seat won't be empty.
"I guarantee you someone will be sitting in the seat I already paid for. So they're going to get paid twice for that seat," he said.
Some Spirit Airlines passengers are disappointed.
"Dollars and cents, not the service they're providing. It's dollars and cents right now, " said Terry Neptune.
Neptune thinks it would be good for Spirit to make an exception.
"Policies are made to be broken, and it would be a Good Samaritan Act on Spirit, and it would be great for their advertisement and their publicity," Neptune said.
But a spokeswoman for Spirit Airlines continues to say they will not bend on their rules.
They said they will not make an exception for Meekins, and said the millions of customers who enjoy their low rates should not have to pay for those who are not following their policies.
