TAMPA - You know the saying, you never get a second chance to make a first impression—the Bucs new head coach Greg Schiano stepped up to the microphone and took over the news conference.
His actions, words, demeanor, were all clear indications on why the Glazers and GM Mark Dominik feel he is the right man for the job.
Schiano talked about the organizations need to re-connect with the fans. Schiano pointed out that he is a CEO head coach, and will hire both an offensive and defensive coordinator, but he will still be heavily involved in all three phases of the game: offense, defense and special teams.
The new head coach wasted little time detailing what kind of team he wants on the field.
"Our team will be built around a humble, unselfish attitude of sacrifice,'' Schiano said. "It's hard to find that in today's world, but that's how it will be.''
But the best thing I think Schiano delivered, were three simple letters: TBA, which stand for Trust, Belief, Accountability. That will be the mantra the Bucs live by.
Schiano describes it this way: "trust in the team, trust in me, trust in your teammates. Belief: believe in yourself, believe in the Buccaneer way. Accountability: be accountable to yourself and the organization, that's the hard part, the sticky part," Schiano said.
Quarterback Josh Freeman was in the room to meet his new head coach, along with safety Cody Grimm, tight end Luke Stocker and running back Legarrette Blount.
Friday afternoon, Schiano starts the process of building his staff. He says he doesn't want a "hunkered down mentality with his coaches." His door will always be open, because Schiano knows it will take a total team effort to turn the team around, to win on the field and win over the fans.
