(AP) -- Da'Sean Butler's second game-winner in three days gave West Virginia its first Big East championship.
The Mountaineers senior guard scored in the lane with 4.2 seconds left and seventh-ranked West Virginia beat No. 22 Georgetown 60-58 to win the Big East tournament. On Thursday night, Butler banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give West Virginia a quarterfinal win over Cincinnati.
Butler scored 20 points for the Mountaineers and was selected the Big East tournament MVP. The Mountaineers are hoping their Big East performance is enough for them to claim a No. 1 seed in the
NCAA tournament.
Chris Wright had 20 for the Hoyas. His length-of-the-court drive to tie the game came up short.
In other tournament action:
-- Top-ranked Kansas beat ninth-ranked Kansas State for the third time this season, whipping the Wildcats 72-64 for the Big 12 tournament title. In all likelihood, the Jayhawks locked up a No. 1 seed in the 65-team NCAA tournament field that will be announced Sunday. Marcus Morris led the Jayhawks with 18. Sherron Collins was named most outstanding player of the Big 12 tournament and scored 12 points and seven assists in the championship game.
-- No. 2 Kentucky beat 15th-ranked Tennessee 74-45 to advance to its accustomed spot in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game. DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Eric Bledsoe had 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Kentucky will play Mississippi State for the SEC title tomorrow. Mississippi State upset 20th-ranked Vanderbilt 62-52 to reach the SEC title game.
-- Kyle Singler scored 27 points to help fourth-ranked Duke push ahead in the second half to beat Miami 77-74 in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinals. Georgia Tech will take on Duke in the ACC title game after a 57-54 win over North Carolina State. Derrick Favors had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
-- Evan Turner scored 12 of his 31 points after regulation, leading No. 5 Ohio State past Illinois 88-81 in double overtime in a Big Ten tournament semifinal. The Illini had two chances to win at the buzzer but failed to get off shots both times, giving Turner a chance to dominate the second overtime.
-- Minnesota held No. 6 Purdue to the worst first half in the Boilermakers' record books and rolled to a 69-42 victory in the Big Ten's other semifinal. The Golden Gophers will play No. 5 Ohio State for the championship.
-- No. 17 Temple held Rhode Island to its lowest point total in five years and beat them 57-44 in an Atlantic 10 Conference tournament semifinal. Ryan Brooks scored 16 points for the top-seeded Owls.
-- Richmond will take on Temple for the Atlantic 10 Conference title, after beating No. 24 Xavier, 89-85. Kevin Anderson scored 27 points and David Gonzalvez added 26 in the semifinals of the
Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.
-- Houston surged past No. 25 UTEP down the stretch to claim its first NCAA tournament berth in 18 years with an 81-73 victory in the Conference USA tournament title game. Kelvin Lewis scored 28
points to lead the Cougars.
In other conference tournament finals and automatic bids:
-- Quincy Pondexter scored 18, Isaiah Thomas added 16 and Washington rallied from a late deficit to win the Pac-10 tournament with a 79-75 victory over California.
-- Kawhi Leonard scored 16 points, grabbed a career-best 21 rebounds and sank all eight of his free throws in the final two minutes as San Diego State fended off UNLV 55-45 to win the Mountain West Conference.
-- Ohio won the Mid-American Conference by outlasting Akron 81-75 in overtime. Freshman D.J. Cooper scored 23 points and made three big plays in OT for the ninth-seeded Bobcats, the lowest seed to ever win the MAC title.
-- Orlando Johnson had 20 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 69-64 victory over Long Beach State for the Big West tournament crown.
-- Marqus Blakely scored 24 points as Vermont beat Boston University 83-70. The Catamounts' America East championship gives them an automatic NCAA tournament bid.
-- New Mexico State ended Utah State's 17-game winning streak 69-63 to win the Western Athletic Conference tourney. Jahmar Young scored 19.
-- Morgan State is headed to the big dance for the second year in a row. Kevin Thompson had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Bears beat South Carolina State 68-61 to capture the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.
-- Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned its first NCAA tournament berth by beating Texas Southern 50-38 on Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.
-- Gilberto Clavell scored 21 points to lead Sam Houston State to an easy 64-48 win over Stephen F. Austin for the Southland Conference tournament championship. The win gives Sam Houston State
its second NCAA tournament berth.
