TAMPA - It is, once again, a field of dreams.
The West Tampa Little League turned out some big-name ballplayers. Fred McGriff, Tino Martinez, Lou Piniella, and Tony LaRussa all played at this park.
But the park had seen better days.
The field has been torn apart. The bleachers and concession stand were falling apart -- until the City of Tampa and the Devil Rays stepped in.
A six-month renovation project is now finished.
"We replaced all the clay, we replaced the field. We provided new dugouts and a concession stand, which really will be a lasting gift for this little league -- a building that will withstand the test of time and show our commitment to this community," explained Matt Silverman, president of the Devil Rays.
City Councilman Charlie Miranda remembers coaching here. He said it looks so much different now.
"They were certainly not like this. They were not as good as this. That was in the 80's and 90's. But they were pretty good," Miranda said.
Now, the concession stand is new. The bleachers have covered overhangs.
E.J. Leto, the president of the league, said the kids can be proud of it.
"It means so much," he offered. "To have them come out here and have a field they love playing on. You look good as a team. Be part of the West Tampa tradition and pride."
Now, that tradition of excellence has a brand new home.
