Tampa Bay area Earth Day events

The Tampa Bay area is celebrating Earth Day's 40th anniversary this week with fun, style, and education. Here's a sample of some of the events taking place:

Green Thumb Festival
St. Petersburg is celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day with its annual festival. The event, in its 24th year, will feature environmental and horticultural exhibits including many different plants and trees. There will also be a recycling rally, free mulch, plant auction, entertainment and children's programs. The Green Thumb Festival is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24 and 25 at Walter Fuller Park.

Party for the Planet
The Lowry Park Zoo inviting families to celebrate Earth Day with the animals. Visitors will have the chance to learn new ways to connect to the environment and conserve natural resources. The celebration includes educational displays, animal enrichment and exhibits throughout the Zoo. Party for the Planet is 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24 and is included with regular Zoo admission.

Trashy Fashion Show 2010
The city of Largo is hosting its third annual Trashy Fashion Show. The show features clothes from amateurs green fashion designers. All clothes are made from at least 75 percent recycled materials or other items that would have been discarded. The Trashy Fashion Show is April 22, with the green room pre-show starting at 5 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m. in the Largo Cultural Center.

Earth Day Tampa
The original event was rained out, but is rescheduled for this week. Earth Day Tampa is sponsored by the Sierra Club and will include eco-friendly exhibitors, demonstrations, arts and crafts and other activities. There will be a special presentation by USF Clean Energy Research Center, which will demonstrate a solar powered lap top and oven. Children and pets are welcomed. Admission and parking is free. Earth Day Tampa is April 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lowry Park Bandshell.

Earth Day Pasco
Covanta Energy is sponsoring this children-friendly event. Activities include lady bug release, children's crafts, educational exhibits, animal rescues, rain barrel workshop, Florida native plant sale, free mercury collection and electronics recycling and much more. Earth Day Pasco is 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. April 24 at Crews Lake Park.
