TAMPA - You might say that Lisa Moehring is nutty over animals. She has nine of her own, two cats and nine dogs, most of them rescues. As if that's not enough work, she spends countless hours trying to improve the lives of the critters at Polk Animal Services.

"I am on the internet trying to contact rescue organizations, set-up outside adoptions, find spay-neuter grants," Moehring said. "It's a life thing. It doesn't stop."

Moehring started her crusade a few years ago when she founded, "Save our Homeless Pets."

She has more work than ever. After two major seizures recently, Polk Animal Services was flooded with more than 300 new dogs and cats in less than one week. The shelter is at now double it's capacity.

Among other things, Save our Homeless Pets tries to adopt out as many pets as possible, put showing them off on its website .

It has also made hundreds of cots for the shelter animals to sleep on, and held wash days where volunteers cleaned up dozens of homeless dogs.

Moehring is the first to volunteer.

"She is wonderful," Polk Sheriff's Office Lt. Craig Burke said. "She has a great heart. She'll do anything for us. It's just a phone call away."
