LAKELAND - A vision of a greener future has arrived in Lakeland, and the Polk County Builders Associations says it's in Morgan Creek Preserve, just southwest of the airport.

Hickman Homes is building what's being called Polk County's greenest home.

It is eco-friendly from top to bottom. There are solar panels on the roof. The walls are made from recycled block, infused with foam insulation. Instead of the traditional fiberglass insulation in the attic, it's sprayed with foam as well.

The foam makes an airtight seal that keeps the heat and cool air inside. It's so energy-efficient, the air conditioning and heating system is half the normal size.

The home is expected to be complete in September, and will be priced at about $300,000. The profit will go to Polk County members of the youth group "Future Builders of America."

"The scholarships can be used at college. The scholarships can be used at technical centers," said Jimmy Giles, one of the groups advisors. "The biggest thing is getting the kids interested in construction and the opportunity to go to school."

For more information about the house, call Hickman Homes at (863) 559-8601.
